John Alfred Nowell, Jr.

A popular nine-year-old Kosciusko youth, John Alfred Nowell, Jr., died Tuesday night in the Montfort Jones Memorial Hospital of injuries received when struck by an automobile three hours earlier.

The third grade student was fatally injured when attempting to cross Highway 35 in front of his home within the city limits. 

An investigation of the accident is being made by police, but no charges have yet been filed against R. L. Cloy of Jackson, driver of the auto.

Services were held Wednesday afternoon at 4 PM at First Baptist Church of Kosciusko with Rev. A.B. Pierce, pastor, officiating. 

Assisting were Rev, J.A. George, Methodist pastor, and Rev. W.L. Ellis, retired Baptist minister.  Burial was in city cemetery with Jordan Funeral home in charge of arrangements.

Young Nowell was an outstanding pupil in the Kosciusko grammar school.  He was planning to join the church Sunday.  His father, Alf Nowell, Sr., is bookkeeper at the Planter’s Oil Mill and Gin Company.

Besides his parents, he leaves a brother, Jimmy Nowell; two sisters, Bettye and Janet Nowell; two grandmothers, Mrs. Mel Goyne and Mrs. W.D. Nowell, both of Kosciusko.

A Kosciusko woman died in a Natchez Trace traffic mishap early
Sunday.

Mrs. Clark Trent Burrell, 29, of 907 Valley Rd., the former Juanice (Niecy) Turnipseed, was the victim of the Trace mishap.

Parkway rangers said a passerby found the wreckage of Mrs. Burrell’s car on the Trace five miles north of Kosciusko about 4 A.M.

Rangers’ said the passerby and his family were enroute to Bruce to visit relatives when they spotted glass and debris in the road at Hurricane Creek crossing.

They stopped and found the wrecked car with Mrs. Burrell’s body inside in the waterless creek.

It was not determined when she died.  The car had apparently crashed into a rail of the bridge, bounced off nearby trees, and landed in the creek bottom.

Mrs. Burrell was a native of Attalla County and a member of First Baptist Church.  She was a former Miss Kosciusko and attended Holmes Junior College.

Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Karen; a son, Clark; her father, Kenneth H. Turnipseed of McCool; her mother, Mrs. Evelyn Greenfield of Durant; her grandmother, Mrs. Breland Jones of Kosciusko; and a sister, Mrs. David Dodd of Sallis.

Services were held Monday afternoon at Nowell Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Harold Kitchings officiating.  Burial was in Mizpah Cemetery at Durant.

Funeral services for Gene Green, 53, of Vicksburg, were held Monday at 2 P.M. at Jordan Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Parkway Cemetery.

Green, a native of Attala County, died April 4, 1992 at Mercer Hospital in Vicksburg following an automobile accident. He was a self employed automobile mechanic and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Faye Green of Vicksburg; his father and stepmother, Paul and Lucille B. Green of Kosciusko; three daughters, Paula Ann Nelson of Missoula MT, Cindy Fredericks of Kalispell, MT, Pamela Jean Green of Whitefish, MT; a son, Tony Green of Whitefish, MT; and a brother, William Green of Kosciusko; Also a step son, Kenneth Graham of Norfolk, VA.; a step sister, Jimmie Rawson of Forest; a step brother, Bernard Rachel of Kosciusko; four grandchildren and one step grandson.

The Rev. Barry Corbett officiated.

Pallbearers were Grady Wheeless, Joe Crist, Eugene Meadows, Robert Roberts, Rick Standish and L.D. Williams.

Funeral services for Carey Patrick “Pat” Vanderford, 62, executive vice president of Merchants & Farmers Bank in Kosciusko, were held Tuesday at 11 A.M. at First Baptist Church.

Vanderford, who had been employed by M&F Bank for more than 35 years, died August 20, 2002 at Crater Lake National Park near Klamath Falls, OR.  He was a member of First Baptist Church, where he served as deacon and director of the Adult Five Sunday School Department.

He was a graduate of Kosciusko High School and Mississippi State University, serving as a national director of the MSU Alumni Association.  He served six years in the Army National Guard.

He is survived by his wife, Linda Breazeale Vanderford of Kosciusko; a daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Craig Heard of Ridgeland; a son and daughter-in-law, Anthony S. “Tony” and Melissa Vanderford of Hernando; a sister, Sue Davis of Jackson; and one granddaughter, Kayla Vanderford.

The Rev. Barry C. Corbett, Dr. Morris H. Chapman, and the Rev. Mark V. Parnell officiated with Jordan Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Pallbearers were Drew Chandler, James Hughes, Robert Autry, Charles England, Scott Wiggers, Charles Hill, Wayne White, and Alan Hatten.

Honorary pallbearers were deacons of First Baptist Church.

Burial was in Parkway Cemetery.

Services for Thomas M. (Tommy) Sanders Sr. , of Kosciusko were held at 3 p.m. at New Hope Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery.

Sanders, a retired shoe salesman died April 24, 2003 at St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson following an extended illness. 

He is survived by his wife, Jeanette Burns Sanders of Kosciusko; his mother Viola W. Sanders of Kosciusko; two sons, Thomas M. (Sandy) Sanders Jr. and Talmadge A.M. (Andy) Sanders of Kosciusko; a daughter, Darlene P. McAdams of Kosciusko; 2 sisters, Laura S. Parks and Marths S. Lawerence of Kosciusko; six grandchildren, Jessica M. Pettit, Bethany McAdams, Wil Sanders, Walt Sanders and Wriley Sanders.

Rev. Dwight Fleming, Rev. George Pitts and Rev. Danny Townsend officiated with Cullpepper Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Pallbearers were Boyd Burns, Rick Reeves, Jarod Green, Ben Burns, Tony Parks, Alvis Parks, Steve Lawrence and Tim Lawrence.

Honorary pallbearers were Wayne Biggart, Alvin Parks, Brian Burns, Bruce Burns, Scott Newell, Chris Lawrence and Marty Saders.

Edwin King, 63, died Wednesday, January 7, 2004, at G.V. "Sonny" Montgomery Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Jackson.  Visitation is 5-7 p.m. today at Lakewood South Funeral Home in Jackson on McClure Road.  Services are 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with burial in Lakewood South Memorial Park.
 
Mr. King was in the Army from 1958-1961 and served in the Jackson Police Department from 1967-1972.  He was also a retired insurance saleman.
 
He is preceded in death by his father, Benton E. King.
 
Mr. King is survived by his wife, Wanda Jean King of Clinton, mother, Ollie Dell King of Brandon, daughters, Renee King of Woodlands, TX, Dawn Beard and husband, Charles of Florence, Christina Monday of Dallas, TX; brothers, Thomas King and wife, Sudie of Brandon, and Ronald King and wife, Mary of Brandon; sister Shellia Smith and husband Roger of Pearl and two grandchildren.

Funeral services for James C. "Jim" Edwards, 66, of Ethel were held May 26 at 11 a.m. at Ebenezer Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery.
 
Edwards, a former Attala County Superintendent of Education, died May 24, 2005, at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson.  He was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church where he served as a deacon.  Masonic rites were conducted at the grave.
 
Edwards, a native of Kosciusko, was the son of Geneis Conley and Myrtis Mangrum Edwards.  He was retired following 34 years as an educator.  He was a graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi and received his masters degree in administration at Florida
Atlantic University in West Palm Beach, and masters degree and specialist degree in administration from Mississippi State University.  He was a member of Phi Delta Kappa.
 
He had also served as Superintendent of Education in Hendry County Florida School System and in the Drew Municipal School System in Drew.  He was a Shriner with Ft. Myers Scottish Rite in Fort Myers, Fla., 32nd degree Mason, member of Lexington Lodge No. 24, former Grand Master of Sugarland Masonic Lodge No. 281 in Clewiston, Fla., member of Mississippi State Association of Superintendents and Sons of Confederate Veterans.
 
He is survived by his wife, Helen Jo Ponder Edwards of Ethel; three daughters, Jamie Sample of Ebenezer, MS. Kim Hester of Marydell, Melissa Fayard of Biloxi; eight grandchildren; a sister, Betty Ferguson of Walls; two nieces and two nephews.
 
Rev. Larry Harvey officiated.
 
Pallbearers were Sam Sample, Robert Hester, Nathan Fayard, Samuel Sample, Jr., Matthew Sample and Patrick Sample.
 
Honorary pallbearers were C.R. "Deter" Blanchard, Edward "Dobbin" Thrasher, Kempe Hodges, Aaron Tolleson, Lewis Hardy, Ed Oliver, Bill Dubard, James Kenneth Mangrum, and Jerry Allen.
 
Jordan Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Graveside services for James Percy Curtis, 66, of Jackson will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Parkway Cemetery. Visitation is from 11 a.m. Friday until service time at Culpepper Funeral Home.

Curtis, a native of Attala County, died Nov. 15, 2006 at his residence. He was a Baptist. He was the son of the late James Elisa and Velma White Curtis.

He is survived by two daughters, Donna Robinson and Debbie McIntyre, both of West Point; a sister, Hope Collette and husband Art of Jackson; a niece, Sandy Jenkins and nephew, David E. Jenkins.

Rev. James Burrell will officiate.

HAMPTON - William Norman Newell, 69, born to the late Rubel and Mary Lois Newell, departed this life
on Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2007, in Hampton.
     He was a native of Mississippi and was a resident of Hampton for 19 years. He retired from the U.S. Air Force as an Msgt on Nov. 30, 1981, after 20 years of service. He was a Vietnam Veteran, Korean War Veteran and received several medals during his honorable service, one being an Air Force Commendation Medal.
Mr. Newell leaves one son, O'Brian Vecina (Joe), and two daughters, Rita Maria Grimm and Barbara Templar (Angie); five grandchildren and other relatives and friends.
     A memorial service will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, at the chapel at Smith Brothers Funeral Home. Interment will be private. Family and friends will assemble by 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Renald Ladell "Renny" Breazeale, age 67, of Sheffield, Ala., died Wednesday, June 25, 2008. His family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m. Friday, June 27, 2008, at Morrison Funeral Home, of Tuscumbia. His funeral service will be at noon Saturday, June 28, 2008, in the funeral home chapel, with Dr. Morris Chapman and Mike Deaton officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery, of Sheffield.

Renny was the former mayor of Sheffield, 1986-1992, a member of the Rotary Club, Alabama Mountain Lakes Association, Sheffield Associated Charities, Moose Lodge, Elks Lodge, VFW, the Mississippi National Guard and USA Reserves.

He is survived by his wife, Sandra Yarber Breazeale, of Sheffield; son, Del Breazeale and wife, Tina, of Syracuse, N.Y.; daughter, Candy York and husband, Mark, of Madison, Ala.; brothers, Royce Breazeale and wife, Flora, Jimmy Breazeale and wife, Peggie; and sister, Rita Pettit and husband, Terry, all of Kosciusko, Miss.; five grandchildren, Brandon Breazeale, Sam Breazeale, Kolana Breazeale, Renny Breazeale and Blake York.

Pallbearers are Steve Baccus, Dr. Joe Cooney, Clayton Kelly, Billy Don Anderson, Charlie Grimmitt and Bob Lemay.

Honorary pallbearers are Doug Aycock, Dr. Ron McCoy and Dr. Loren McCoy.

Sara Jo Evans age 69 of Cleveland passed away Sunday October 4, 2009 at Northeast Ga Medical Center.

Mrs. Evans was born in Kosciusko Mississippi the daughter of the late James and Mabel Strahan Pender.  She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and a volunteer at the White County Library in Cleveland.

She is survived by sons, Michael Evans, Buford, Ted Evans, Lexington, TN; former husband, Howard Evans; sister Judy and niece Tina; grandchildren, Rainey Evans, Cody Evans, Austin Evans, Alyssa Evans.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday October 7, 2009 from the First Presbyterian Church in Cleveland.  Dr. Roe M. Callaway Jr. will officiate.

The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
