September 18, 1958 Members of the Attala Mills American Legion baseball team are Jon Kling, Lamar Bailey, Elton Wright, Frank Johnston, Alton Wright, Michael nelson, Frank McCain, Benjy Scarborough, Emmett Sylvester, Larry Goza, Leroy Sylvester, Johnny Pearson, Morris Chapman, Hillory Wright and Ronny Walker. Jimmy Graves is coach. Top scholastic honors at Kosciusko High School went to Jeanette Furr, Valedictorian, with an average of 97 for four years of high school. Second high honors went to Mary Katherine Jordan, Salutatorian.
Sandra Sue Giles was winner of the third annual Merchants & Farmers Bank's essay award made to the high school senior writing the most outstanding essay on "Finding My Future in Kosciusko".
May 15, 1958 “Our Mississippi Heritage” will be the theme of the program for commencement exercises at Kosciusko High School on May 13 at 8 p.m. at the high school gymnasium. “What it Means to be a Mississippian” will be the basis of an address by Mary Katherine Jordan. Other speaker will be Jeanette Furr, whose topic will be “Our Future as Mississippians.” Ready for their initial game of the season here Sunday afternoon at 2:30 with Holmes Junior players are the Kosciusko Semi-Pros. They will be wearing their bran new uniforms contributed by baseball minded business firms and organizations. They are Jimmy Graves, Larry Therrell, Jimmy Pacquinette, John Niles, Sonny McDonald, Allen Payne, James Benton Campbell, Bobby Lowe, Wade Brown, Pete Shumaker, Ramon Jackson, John Ables. Selected as “Coach of the Year” for girls basketball teams by Choctaw Conference coaches in session at Philadelphia Saturday was Kosciusko’s Head Coach, Adrian McBeath. Members of the girls’ and boys’ basketball teams of Kosciusko high school were honored Tuesday night at a banquet at the high school cafeteria by a group of basketball fans with arrangements made by J.R. (Bob) Henry. Sponsors were Robert Holmes, Billy McMillan, V.C. Allen, D.H. (Buddy) Hayes, Dr. S.L. Bailey, Roy Braswell, James Watts, Wallace Poole, Ramon Jackson, Henry Power and J.R. Henry. March 6, 1958 Three outstanding Attala girls have been selected by the Samuel Hammond Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution as Good Citizens and will compete in the 1958 DAR state contest, announces Mrs. Howard P. Boyd, Good Citizen chairman for the DAR chapter. They are Mary Katherine Jordan of Kosciusko, Floyce Irene Mangrum of Zama, and Jane Ellen Adams of Ethel. Award of the annual trophy to the most valuable player of the Whippet football team was a highlight of school activities this week. Mayor Tobe V. Rone made the presentation at chapel exercises to Roy (Luke) Terry, star fullback of the team. Terry was unanimously elected by members of the team as most valuable player of the year. The trophy is sponsored by the Dr. Pepper Bottling Company of Kosciusko. An important time in football activities is the awarding of letters to outstanding members of the team by the coaches. Presented letters this week were 15 members of the team. Receiving jackets were Drew Chandler, co-captain, Jimmy Fisher, captain, James Horne, Roy Terry, Wayland Clifton, Hugh Lee Ballard, Benjy Scarborough, Jack Dew, Benny Odom, Wilson Chitwood, Terry Reynolds, Jerry Jenkins, Douglas McAdams, Jimmy Rigby and Albert Stanley. Nov. 28, 1957 Kosciusko Whippets hit the basket for 63 points to win over Thomastown 63-42 for the first game of the cage season. Team members are James Johnson, Frank McCain, Hillary Wright, Renny Breazeale, Donald Dendy, Drew Chandler, Dennis Dendy, Michael Nelson, Hugh Lee Ballard, Roy Terry, Pete Harvey, Edward Harkey, Jeff Dendy, Jimmy Fisher, A.J. Clark and Jimmy Pacquinette. A.D. McBeath is coach. Nov. 14, 1957 Members of the Dramatics Club at Kosy High are Shirley Payne, Willease Carpenter, Frances Payne, Irma Faye Aldy, Willease Burrell, Katherine Hudgins, Kathleen Malpass and Janice Pinkard. June 13, 1957 Representing Attala County at Magnolia Girls State at Belhaven College in Jackson are Jeanette Furr, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Furr of Dossville, who is being sponsored by the Kosciusko Rotary Club; Martha Mills, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Mills of Kosciusko, sponsored by the Kosciusko Lions Club and the Legion Auxiliary. Jane Adams, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Adams of Ethel is being sponsored by Merchants & Farmers Bank; Mary Faye Braswell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Tom Braswell, is sponsored by the Business & Professional Women’s Club and the Legion Auxiliary. April 11, 1957 Mary Katherine Jordan, the ‘56-’57 associate editor of the Daze, will edit the Kos-Hi Daze for next year. Chosen as business manager for next year is Morris Chapman. The advertising staff is made up of Margaret Aden Jackson, Tina Williams, Jack Jordan, Kermit Campbell and Ronnie Walker. Roy Terry, Hillory Wright, Jack Dew and Jimmy Fisher comprise the circulation staff. March 28, 1957 William Hull, 18, Gene Alton Green, 17, and Jack R. Williams, 17, are completing their Air Force basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, “the Gateway to the Air Force.” Jan. 31, 1957 Winners of the Attala County cage tourney held last weekend at the McAdams gym were members of Kosciusko boys team. They are Hugh Lee Ballard, Pete Harvey, Drew Chandler, Lamar Sims, Warren Sanders, Renny Breazeale, Edward Harkey, manager Sidney McCool, Raybon Robertson, Jesse Massey, Jimmy Fisher, Ray Bennett and Coach Adrian McBeath. Dec. 27, 1956 Three Attala 4-H girls have received additional awards for their state fair exhibits. Patsy Ann Cook, Melba Jean May and Betty Glaze have received checks from United Gas Company amounting to 50 percent of the official premiums they won. Dec. 20, 1956 Members of the Kosciusko High basketball team are Pete Harvey, Rennie Breazeale, Warren Sanders, Jeff Dendy, Roy Terry, Rabon Robertson, Lamar Sims, Jessie Massey, Jim Barfield, Jimmy Fisher, Hugh Lee Ballard and Ray Bennett. Oct. 11, 1956 Scheduled to reign as homecoming royalty at Kosciusko High School are Rynnie Davidson, queen; Patricia Myrick, senior maid; Marilyn Watts, junior maid; Margaret Aden Jackson, sophomore maid; Polly Terry, freshman maid. Selected as Queen of the Fair over 19 contestants Friday night was Jaunice (Niecy) Turnipseed, granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Breland Jones. Chosen as first alternate was Carol White of Ethel; second alternate, Joyce Burchfield of Kosciusko. The new queen was crowned by Paula Thrasher of Zama, 1955 queen. August 23, 1956 Among lettermen working out at Camp Rockbrook are Jimmy Fisher, Jimmy Alexander, John Kirkland, Jimmy McCrory and Hugh Ballard. These will be the boys Coach king will have to lean on for lots of assistance this year. |

Kosy’s Terry tapped for Holmes HoF KOSCIUSKO — Roy “Luke” Terry was in an elite class while at Holmes Junior College in the late 50s. Not only did the Kosciusko native and current Sallis resident make All-State both seasons, he was also named All-American his sophomore year, MVP and played in an All-Star game in New Mexico. |
